Identity Theft

and

Computers

In this technologically advanced age, computers in almost every household, many ask, "How can I protect myself?"

I am not going to cover a lot on viruses, worms, trojans, etc. except if they pertain to IDT.  Viruses can be programmed to be very destructive and corrupt not only software byt hardware as well.

The focus here is to decrease your exposure and susceptibility to identity thieves accessing the information you have stored on your computer.

If you do not access the internet for any reason, you do not use email nor any type of wireless or Bluetooth connection, your computer is very safe against attack.  This is not to say that some one couldn't get physical access to your computer or your computer stolen.  then your information is at risk.  Sensitive information must be encrypted because sometimes passwords are not enough.

Here are thing you need to protect yourself by not limited to:

Anti-Virus Program

An anti-virus (AV) program is imperative to have on any computer that connects to the internet.  I feel this is the least amount of protection you should have on your computer!

I suggest when you install an AV program, be sure that it updates the database on a regular basis.  There are both pay and free software to search and destroy these programs on your computer.

Unfortunately, there are many hackers out there in cyberspace that lie in waiting to get a hit from an unprotected computer to reek havoc with.

Viruses can corrupt your files, steal your information, cause your computer to be a Zombie  computer (we'll cover this later) or simply as a flow-through computer so the trail to the hacker is more difficult to trace.

Yes, these things can and do happen!!

Firewall

An added layer of protection.  Microsoft has a built in firewall that can be turned on or off.  If you have a home or business network and use a router, this adds even further protection bby adding additional encryption.  the encryption through a router is a long stream of numbers and letter which hackers find difficult (although not impossible) to circumvent.

Logically which is more appealing to a hacker, an easy target or a complex code they would have to decipher.  Unless of course, they are attempting to hack a large corporation or the government.

Malware / Spyware Blocker

These little nuisances can play havoc with your computer.

Malware/Spyware initially add code and cookies to track your computer usage on the internet.  These programs are frequently responsible for the type and amount of SPAM you receive through email.

These programs can slow your computer down.

Some malware/spyware can hide viruses.

I know of one that provide a virtual pet to keep you company.  Unbeknownst to me I was being tracked and started getting bombarded with advertisements and SPAM.

There are both pay and free software to search and destroy these programs on your computer.  Again, the programs you choose must have the ability to be updated to defend against new programs that infect your computer.

These programs are some of what I consider to be the most necessary tools to protect your computer from becoming infected.

Now let's take a look at how we as a general public are persuaded to offer our information freely.  By being deceived or coerced are a couple of the ploys the IDT thieves use.
