How Identity Theft Happens

There are all types of identity thieves just waiting for an opportunity to use YOUR information.

Privacy Rights.org has a running tally on how many pieces of information have been compromised since 2005.

The current tally is:
542,214,290

Here are just some of the ways identity thieves steal your information:

  • Phishing
  • Pharming
  • Skimming
  • Dumpster Diving
  • Mosaic Phishing
  • Over-the-Shoulder
  • Pre-approved Credit Card offers
Some of the techniques you may have heard of, others you need to learn about.  Again, the above is only a partial list of techniques.

As technology grows, so does the potential for stealing your good name and personal information.

If you have the attitude of "You can have my identity, you wouldn't want my life", think about this:

What would you do if you woke up one
morning and found your picture was on the
front page of the newspaper for having a
child porn site on the internet?

Do you still think your personal information isn't worth something?  Do you really think that this would further impact your life negatively?  Think again, you may want to re-evaluate whether you would want someone else to have your identity.

Identity thieves advertise the information they have stolen openly in chat rooms and websites throughout the internet.  Example of it can be seen here:

How valuable is your information?  Here is a chart compiled from information obtained through WordPress:

A couple of very important finding I'd like to point out regarding the above chart.

  • Are you surprised at the street value of your information?  I know I was!  The reason for the low cost is because once your information is 'out there' to be used, it can be used and or sold multiple times.
  • The real value here is not your credit card information, it is your medical insurance information.  Yet, how often have you heard about Medical Identity Theft in the news?  What are you doing to protect it?
Identity Theft is the #1 complaint the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) receives.  this is a worldwide problem, not just here in the United States, and the United States is only now becoming truly aware of this crime.
