The first part of your protection will be to have credit monitoring.  Even though Financial IDT is only approx. 26%, it is important to ensure you are notified PROMPTLY when your report is accessed, changed or altered.  You should be notified with the first few days ideally.  I have known individual owners of IDT plans having a WIDE range of experiences regarding the amount of time it has taken to be notified by a particular product.  Anywhere from a few hours to weeks before notice was given to them of a possible compromise of their credit. 

You should be aware of the type of service that you will be provided in the event you become a victim of IDT.  After reading a large majority of the so-called Identity Theft Protection plans on the market, I can tell you first hand they ARE NOT all created equal.  A huge majority of them simply provide someone you can to talk who will walk you through the process of restoring your own identity.  You, are still responsible for doing all the leg work and spending the hours, days, weeks & months, not to mention the money and lost time from work restoring your own identity.  There are alternatives.

Second Step

Legal Access

Another important component of Identity Restoration is having access to an attorney.  Again, a vast majority of these IDT plans willONLY provide you access to an attorney if THEY feel it is necessary.  I have talked with one of these companies that choose an attorney FOR YOU and here is what I was told:

                       "We will provide you with a qualified attorney." 

                        When I asked them what qualifications they had they could only                         tell me a licensed attorney. 

                       "We will assign you one close to where you live."

                        When I asked them what if my identity is used out of state??                          They couldn't answer that question. 

                        Nor could they answer what they would do if I became a victim                         of Medical IDT.

It is necessary to have access to an attorney because identity theft is at first, a legal problem.  You may have a friend who is an attorney and/or has contacts in other states because different states have different laws and attorneys are generally only licensed in one maybe two states.
